Gaga Topples iTunes Record; Could Be 1000th Billboard #1

Lady Gaga is not just a singer-songwriter, performer, and figment of the collective pop culture imagination, she is one of the best PR people in the industry today. After releasing phased details about her new song through the internet cosmos, the singer has finally released "Born This Way", one that has been the center of discussion well before we had any audio of the track. And it appears her publicity-saavy attempts were very successful.

"Born This Way" has shattered records at iTunes, taking the top spot on the songs chart in just a couple of hours after release. The previous record held by Taylor Swift since August for her song "Mine" was for a very respectable five hours. With the demand reaching an apex in today's industry uncertainty, it is very good news. The song will be performed this Sunday at the Grammys, while the album faces a late May release (I have a feeling that may need to be moved up).

Although Lady Gaga is smashing iTunes records, the song will need to pull miraculous numbers to have a chance at number one this week. With no radio support and only three days to sell, the song would have to sell several hundred thousand copies over a short period. If the song does achieve the nearly impossible, it will be the 1000th Billboard Hot 100 hit, something that I'm sure Gaga and her fans would love to see. Guess we'll just have to wait.
